Japan has again succeeded in becoming the most powerful passport in the world in 2022, allowing its citizens visa-free access to 193 countries. This report is consistent with the Henley Passport Index Third Quarter 2022 report which was recently released.
This index is calculated by Henley & Partners, which is a global investment firm specializing in residency and citizenship, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The Index’s scoring system is developed to give users reliable and practical insight into the power of their Passport, according to the Henley report. Thus, each passport is scored on the total number of destinations the holder can access without a visa.
The Henley Passport Index is based on a comparison of the access rights of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations with or without an additional visa. Thus, for each destination where no visa is required, where a residence permit, visa or electronic travel authorization (ETA) can be obtained on arrival, a nation’s passport scores one point.
If rumors are to be believed, the lifting of the international travel ban has helped passports regain their trump cards. To contain the spread of COVID-19, many countries closed their borders and gradually started to open up after a two-year period in March 2022, making it easier to travel around the world.
